Course Description

This course material discusses following concepts


1. General concept on the structure of ketone and aldehyde

2. Examples of ketone and aldehyde compounds in natural products

3. Various Nucleophilic addition which is a characteristic reactions of ketone and aldehyde and explanation: Example: Cyanohydrin, acetal, imine, hydrazone etc.


4. Physical properties: Comparison of BP of carbonyl compounds with other compounds of similar molecular weight


5. Reactions of carbonyl compounds with various organometallic reagents like Grignard, Gilman and dimethyl cadmium


6. Synthesis of aldehyde and ketone using various procedures: (i) oxidation of alcohols, (ii) reduction of esters, acid chloride, nitrile (iii) ozonolysis of alkenes, (iii) synthesis of aromatic ketone by Friedel crafts acylation, (iv) Riemer Tieman reaction, (v) Rosenmund reaction (vi) Etard reaction, (vii) Stephen reduction, (viii) Oxymercuration-demercuration of alkynes, (ix) hydroboration-oxidation of 


7. Laboratory tests for identification of carbonyl compounds. Ex. 2, 4-DNP, Tollens, Fehling and iodoform test
